Cottesloe Beach House: A Coastal Home Designed for Real Living

At SJS Interior Design, every project begins the same way:
how do our clients actually live?

Not how it should look.
Not what’s trending.

Just real life.

The Cottesloe Beach House was designed around exactly that. A full home project shaped by the rhythm of a family’s everyday life, where each space connects and supports the next.

Where Everyday Life Actually Happens

The kitchen sits at the centre of the home, designed as a space that does more than just function.

It opens directly into the dining area, where long tables and soft light create a natural place to gather. The scale of the furniture, the openness of the layout, and the materials all work together to make it feel easy, not overdesigned.

But one of the most important decisions in this home wasn’t about aesthetics.

It was about placement.

A Home Office That Reflects Real Life

Instead of separating work from the rest of the home, the home office was positioned directly alongside the kitchen.

Because that’s what made sense for this family.

With a mum working from home, this layout allows her to stay connected to what’s happening around her, while still having a dedicated space to focus.

It’s a small shift in planning, but one that completely changes how the home functions day to day.

This is what “Real Homes, Real People” looks like in practice.
Design that adapts to life, not the other way around.

A Coastal Home Designed for the Way This Family Lives

Set near the coast, the home already carried a sense of openness. What it needed was warmth, flow, and a feeling of ease.

Rather than leaning into a typical coastal look, the focus was on creating something more grounded and lasting.

Across the entire home, you see that through:

  • soft, neutral tones that hold the space together

  • natural materials that feel calm and tactile

  • clean lines balanced with warmth and texture

From the dining area through to the kitchen and living spaces, everything feels connected, not styled in isolation.

Spaces That Balance Connection and Calm

While the main living areas are open and social, the home also allows for quieter moments.

The sitting room and main living space each carry a slightly different feel, giving the family options depending on how they want to use the space.

Layered textures, soft furnishings, and considered lighting create warmth without heaviness. Nothing feels forced, just comfortable and resolved.

Even the entry moments are kept simple and intentional, setting the tone as you move through the home.

A Home That Feels Effortless to Live In

What ties this project together isn’t one standout feature.
It’s how everything works as a whole.

From how light moves through the spaces, to how materials sit next to each other, to how furniture is arranged for actual use, every decision supports the way this family lives.

The result is a home that feels calm, functional, and quietly refined.

Why “Real Homes, Real People” Matters

At SJS, we don’t design for show.
We design for living.

Homes should reflect the people inside them. They should feel personal, adaptable, and easy to move through.

The Cottesloe Beach House is a clear example of that. A home shaped by real routines, real needs, and real life.

Thinking About Your Own Home?

Whether you’re building, renovating, or reworking your space, the starting point is always the same:
how you want to live.

We work across Sydney, Byron Bay and the Northern Rivers, creating homes that are thoughtful, functional, and built around real people.
