In a secluded haven enveloped by nature atop a hill, the brief to SJS was to craft a retreat for a homeowner seeking a perpetual holiday at home.

A collaboration with Watershed Architecture, Venture Constructions and SJS, the task was to craft a residence resistant to harsh northern elements, while exuding a carefree holiday vibe, functionality and durability took precedence in the design. Positioned to withstand sweeping ocean views, the focus was on longevity before incorporating aesthetics or whimsical touches.

The project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the outdated 1980s floorplan spanning four levels, while preserving parts of the original brick façade. The transformative process included replacing glass-wrapped doors and structural columns with expansive floor-to- ceiling sliding panels, seamlessly connecting living spaces and capturing panoramic views. The kitchen and dining areas were reconfigured by eliminating enclosed walls, fostering an open and interconnected ambiance. Timber decks were replaced, curves removed, and a new vergola introduced, significantly expanding entertainment spaces for year-round enjoyment.

The client expressed profound admiration for the glacial blue hue and concave shape manifested in the Quartzite kitchen island. This tonality served as inspiration for infusing softness and delicate warm tones of diluted rusts, blush, and terracotta into the furnishings. The harmonious blend complemented contemporary furniture and naturally textured elements, creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing interior design.
