Eastern Hill Villa, Manly

Eastern Hill Villa, Manly

Engaged by the clients upon the recommendation of the architects, SJS was tasked with collaborating with the team to oversee the interior design of this striking federation villa, complemented by a new contemporary double-story addition nestled in the vibrant heart of Manly in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The client's vision was clear - to establish a welcoming, intricately layered residence brimming with personality and charm, paying homage to its historical essence. The directive was straightforward: no grey hues; only inviting creamy tones to serve as the foundation for this elegantly detailed villa. From the outset, the goal was to cherish the ornate architectural elements while crafting cozy, individualized spaces for each family member.

While preserving the original front section of the house, attention was focused on reimagining the layout to incorporate two guest bedrooms, an ensuite, a bathroom, a laundry room, a TV lounge, and a study, all meticulously integrated by Watershed Architecture. The restoration of the grand arches in the hallway, pressed tin ceilings, picture rails, cornices, and skirtings were complemented by strategic lighting, custom wallpapers, and fresh paint finishes.

In the bathrooms, a unique blend of handcrafted tiles adorned with intricate details and vibrant colours juxtaposed against smooth, creamy micro cement walls evoked a sense of wanderlust inspired by the client's journeys through Morocco.

The innovative three-story addition took on a different character, featuring airy, open spaces illuminated by floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that seamlessly connected to the terrace, harmoniously blending with the original brickwork of the house. Embracing a design ethos that emphasized an interplay of textures, colours, and fluid lines in the bespoke joinery and fireplace surrounds, the interiors exuded a bespoke sense of luxury and playfulness in equal measure.
