Drummoyne

A home for generations in a leafy Sydney suburb

As featured in: Design Anthology

The Drummoyne home is a considered and honest approach to creating a timeless home for a young family to pass on through the generations. Space planning, key passive design principles and integrity in the material palette were used to create a home that celebrates each design detail.

We created a timeless interior with restrained materiality and honest materials that would last the test of time. The kitchen island for example was formed in marble with a piece of porcelain in-laid to ensure a hard-wearing work space. This home was a true collaboration between the clients (who were also the builders) and us to really focus on perfecting the design details - from the cantilevered stair treads, the splayed island and the pivot front door to the hidden powder room. As the budget wasn’t too high focusing on key pieces helped to elevate the design intent.

We worked with local makers to custom design many of the pieces such as the dining table, coffee table and modular sofa. The integrity of the materiality in the design meant the decoration could be rather minimal. Wool and jute rugs along with linen fabrics were used to soften the stronger materials. Art was key in this house, and by featuring a few large pieces we were able to introduce colour and break up solid expansive walls - an opportunity to be bold in such a minimal space. The velvet and timber veneer bedhead in the main bedroom was designed to be bold, working on the fact that the whole house was a study in hard materials layered with softer ones.
